Fiction Fest: Getting to know Heather Ostler, author of ‘The Siren’s Secret’

Heather Ostler NEWIt’s always fun getting to know Sweetwater Books authors a little better, which is why you should tune in to our Fiction Fest series more often!

Today’s guest in the Fiction Fest hot seat is Heather Ostler, author of “The Siren’s Secret,” which was released in June. The book is the second in “The Shapeshifter’s Secret” series and is available in book stores and online from Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, and BooksAndThings.com.

Now that the formalities are out of the way, let’s see what Ostler had to say!

How did “The Shapeshifter’s Secret” series come to life?

This series has been in the works for a long time. I started writing about my main character, Julia Levesque, when I was in junior high school. I loved the character and I continued to write about her adventures for years. Overtime the story changed dramatically. Julia became a werecat shapeshifter, her friends were water nymphs, and she belonged to a secret world called Ossai. It’s been fun to see the story unfold and change into what it is today.

What is your writing routine like?

It’s different every day. When I’m in the writing zone I can write for hours. I try and set a goal to write at least 5,000 words a day when I’m feeling inspired.

What’s the most joy writing has brought to you?

Hearing positive feedback from my readers has brought me a lot of happiness. I feel very fortunate every time I hear back from a fan that enjoyed my novels enough to write and let me know.Sirens Secret 2x3

What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Being able to do what I love. Creating new characters and stories is so much fun for me; it’s something I hope to do for a very long time.

What do you enjoy least about being an author?

Trying to find balance between writing, editing, and marketing. Each step is essential, but they are all very time consuming and sometimes overwhelming.

What is your current work in progress?

I am working on the third and final book in “The Shapeshifter’s Secret” series; it will be the epic conclusion to Julia’s adventures in Ossai.

Which author had the most influence on your writing style?

Gail Carson Levine, author of “Ella Enchanted.”

Who are your favorite musical artists?

John Schmidt and Michael Buble.

What advice would you offer to aspiring novelists?

Set goals for yourself and write everyday!
